Today: Superman's Capes
Superman's cape is one of the most recognizable accessories in pop culture history. The overall design of the outfit has stayed consistent throughout the years, but with each new Superman comes a new variation of the iconic superhero suit.
Muscle Magic
George Reeves was the second person to ever play Superman on screen, with the cape we have in the Ripley's collection being used during the filming of the Superman series in the 50s. This set stands out from the others in the collection because it still has the muscle suit that was worn under it! No celebrity gym trainers here, they got muscles the old-fashioned way, by using movie magic.
Walk Like a (Super) Man
Next up we have Christopher Reeve’s 1978 cape! The cape in our collection was worn by him in Superman and Superman 2 . This cape was used only for the scenes where he walked in the cape, as during the flying scenes the cape was much longer to give it a more dramatic effect.
He CANE do it!
Lastly, we have Dean Cane’s Superman costume, which we have an extra special relationship with because after playing Superman, Cane went on to host our very own Ripley’s TV show!
This cape was used in the series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman , which aired in the 90’s. This suit was known for debuting a new dark blue color scheme.
